Senior Scientist (m/f)

GERICS invites applications for a Senior Scientist (m/f), as soon as possible, as part of the project “Detaillierte Einflüsse der winterlichen Klimaänderungen im Stadtklima Hamburgs”. The project is a close cooperation with Meteorol. Inst., Univ. Hamburg (Group of Prof. Schlünzen). Therefore, the successful applicant will work half the time at the University and become guest member of Universität Hamburg. The position is limited to 3 years.

The project aims at investigating climate change related impacts on the City of Hamburg with focus on winter. This includes the quantification of temperature and precipitation changes on the city level using regional and locale climate model results. A detailed city modeling with the microscale model MITRAS of current and future winter conditions is planned to investigate impacts on the city infrastructure and quantify the effects of adaption measures.

Areas of responsibilities:

  • MPI parallelisation of MITRAS
  • Optimizing MITRAS for the current generation high-performance computer of DKRZ
  • Contributing thematically and technically to the progress of the project
  • Compiling scientific and technical publications of the findings of the different areas in related international peer-reviewed research journals and contributing to the project reporting

Profile of qualifications:

  • A university degree in computer science, meteorology, physics, maths or other related disciplines is essential
  • Experience in the field of climate modelling, preferably experience with limited-area climate and/or microscale models and their parallelization
  • Excellent knowledge of the programming language Fortran
  • Profound knowledge in appropriate programming languages such as Python and experience with Linux/Unix computer environments
  • Experience with the use of high-performance computers
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in German and/or English
  • Willingness to work in an international and interdisciplinary team at the Climate Service Center Germany. Interest beyond the pure scientific analysis of data and processes is expected as the focus of our center is on the provision of decision making knowledge

It is intended that a PhD student will become a member of the SICCS graduate school of Centre for Earth System Sciences and Sustainability (CEN, Univ. Hamburg). The position is limited to 3 years.

The project aims at investigating climate change related impacts on the City of Hamburg with focus on winter.   • refining the snow and frozen soil parametrizations of MITRAS and including a parametrization that allows to take snow on slanted roofs into account
  • conducting and evaluating the newly developed parametrizations using available observations and wind tunnel data
  • contributing thematically and technically to the progress of the project
  • compiling scientific and technical publications of the findings of the different areas in related international peer-reviewed research journals and contributing to the project reporting

Profile of qualifications:

  • a university degree in meteorology, physics, maths or other related disciplines in natural sciences and Earth science is essential
  • experience in the field of regional modelling of the climate or Earth system, preferably experience with limited-area climate and/or microscale models
  • experience in post-processing of climate data for scientific application and using high-performance computing facilities would be beneficial

GERICS invites applications for a PhD position (m/f), starting March 1st, 2018, in coupled regional climate and land use modelling and coordinated land use change modelling experiments. The project is a close cooperation with Institute for Geography at University Hamburg (Group of Prof. Dr. Jürgen Böhner). The position is limited to 3 years.

Areas of responsibilities:

  • Compilation of a quality tested historical time series of land use and management data including urban areas at high spatial resolution based on suitable remote sensing products
  • Investigation of the distribution and changes of land use types and related biogeophysical parameters
  • Implementation of land use dynamics into a regional climate model and detection of transient changes in the regional and local energy and water balance
  • Compilation of land use change data sets over Europe based on potential future land use scenarios for implementation into regional climate models, in coordination with the FPS LUCAS
  • Representation of GERICS at scientific conferences and meetings, and compiling scientific and technical publications of the findings in related international peer-reviewed research journals

Profile of qualifications:

  • Diplom / Master in physics, meteorology, geography or other related disciplines in natural sciences and earth science is essential
  • Knowledge and experiences in compiling and analysing gridded data sets of land use types and land use transitions, e.g. based on derived products from remote sensing, is required
  • Experiences in modelling of land surface processes and land use changes; as well as experiences in regionale climate modelling would be beneficial
  • Knowledge in appropriate programming languages such as Python and R, and experience with Linux/Unix computer environments

Senior Scientist (m/f)

GERICS invites applications for a Senior Scientist (m/f), starting March 1st, 2018, in coupled regional climate and land use modelling and coordinated modelling experiments in the frame of WCRP CORDEX Flagship Pilot Study LUCAS. The position is limited to 4 years.

Areas of responsibilities:

  • Advancement of regional climate system models to represent local-scale land-atmosphere interactions under human land use and management
  • Modelling and analyses of coupled climate - land processes under dynamic land use changes at regional to local scales and validation with multi-compartment observations
  • Development of new diagnostics to identify robust effects of land use changes on local and regional climate through intercomparison of the regional climate model ensemble of WCRP CORDEX Flagship Pilot Study LUCAS
  • Representation of GERICS at scientific conferences and meetings, but also in the area of societal relevant events; and compiling scientific and technical publications of the findings in related international peer-reviewed research journals
  • Integration of relevant project results and synthesis of current knowledge into the context of regional land use planning and climate adaptation policies of agricultural land management and forestry; and development of a prototype scenario tool for decision support in land use planning and climate adaptation
  • Contribution to GERICS product development with respect to analyses, preparation and visualistion of climate model data, also in combination with ecological and socio-economic data

Profile of qualifications:

  • A university degree and Ph.D. in meteorology, physics, maths or other related disciplines in natural sciences and earth science is essential
  • Extensive knowledge and experiences in regional climate modelling with focus on modelling coupled land-atmosphere processes under land mangagment and land use transitions essential
  • Extensive experience in the analysis of data sets from climate models and evaluation of simulated land-climate interactions and interpretation of climate model ensemble simulations; experience in applying statistical methods and time series analyses
  • Excellent knowledge of the programming language Fortran. Profound knowledge in appropriate programming languages such as Python and R and experience with Linux/Unix computer environments. Experience in using high-performance computing facilities
  • Knowledge and experiences in the area of land use policies and land management options for climate adaptation, as well as with the development of innovative products in the area of climate services would be beneficial
  • Experience in communicating scientific results to scientists and stakeholders
  • Experience in contributing (scientifically and organizationally) to international scientific projects and networks such as the EURO-CORDEX initiative
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in German and English, as well as a record of peer reviewed publications in order to demonstrate the skill to publish the work in scientific journals
