GERICS Colloquium March 30

Adaptation response to climate change with a focus on health and resilience

SpeakerDr. Sari Kovats - Associate Professor in the Department of Public Health, Environments and Society, Faculty of Public Health and Policy, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK

Abstract

In the UK, the Climate Change Act 2008 includes a responsibility for public agencies, including the health and social care sector, to adapt to climate change. The UK’s Third Climate Change Risk Assessment was published in 2021. Climate change is likely to affect human health through increases in heat exposures, flooding and through changes in distribution of infections diseases. This talk will discuss the research evidence used to informal the risk assessment and the prioritisation of risks based on both the likely magnitude of impact and the current capacity to manage these risks.
