Keynote by Daniela Jacob at the 3rd CSI Global Forum

Presentation of a new Climate-Fact-Sheet for Costa Rica

The project "Climate Services for Infrastructure Investment (CSI)" is part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI), which is funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).

Within the framework of CSI, GERICS has developed a Climate-Fact-Sheet for a river basin in the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica in cooperation with the Meteorological Institute of Costa Rica (IMN). It is intended to help support the climate risk assessment for the La Guadia Bridge on National Highway 21.

On the occasion of the 3rd CSI Global Forum on 25 March 2021, Daniela Jacob will give a keynote speech and Tania Guillen and Claas Teichmann from GERICS will give a presentation to introduce the new Climate-Fact-Sheet.

The background
Every year, emerging and developing countries invest billions in durable infrastructure. Often, they do not take future climate development into account in their planning. This leads to high risks of damage and misinvestment, with potentially serious economic and social consequences. Numerous countries have begun efforts to increase the resilience of their infrastructure and have set this as a goal in their (Intended) Nationally Determined Contributions (INDC); among them Brazil, Costa Rica and Vietnam.

The aim of CSI is to increase the use of climate services by decision-makers when planning infrastructure investments and thus contribute to increasing their resilience. In this way, CSI contributes to the achievement of Goal 9 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
